Can goodness exist without darkness?

William Blake in his poetry touches upon the abstract concept of goodness and darkness. From reading his poems, it can be seen that Blake believes that goodness can only exist with darkness. If there was no darkness, there would be no goodness. In the poem “The Little boy Lost”, the boy loses his father as he is not able to keep up with him. The little boy is then surrounded in darkness and that is when he starts to cry and ask for help. In “The Little boy Found”, God intervenes and takes the little boy to his mother making things good again. If the little boy had not experienced darkness, he would have never cried and God would have never helped him making nobody good or bad. Because the darkness existed, God had to intervene making God a good person. I found this concept to be extremely intriguing as it is similar to the analogy of the spoiled and good milk. One would not know if the milk is spoiled if one has not tasted good milk. Only after tasting the good milk can you tell if the milk is good or spoilt. This made me realize that these two concepts adhere to the rules of the yin yang. These completely opposite concepts are actually interconnected and depend on each other. Without one of them, the other would cease to exist.

This then led me to ask myself, do us humans follow the same rule? Do we all have a little darkness inside of us? I believe that we all do and we have to power to make to right or wrong choice and when we choose to make the right choice instead of the wrong, that is what makes us good people. I believe that if we did not have darkness in us, we would not be able to tell what is good and since we do, we are able to tell what is right and what is wrong and with that we give ourselves the power to be good or bad people.
